The Curious Case of TV Network Executives Not Seeing the Gold in Temp Worker Characters

star india: Star India, Trexit, and the curious case of National Broadcasting Policy - The Economic Times

TV has for some reason not looked to the inherently entertaining dramatic and comedic possibilities of a temp worker who finds himself (or herself!) working in a completely different environment every week to the degree that you would expect. Network executives are supposed to know better. Yeah, I know; that was an observation that can be undermined with five simple words: the existence of Duck Dynasty. But just because some TV executives would be dumb enough to find anything remotely appealing–or even just not completely repulsive–about the people on Duck Dynasty does not mean that the majority of them can’t learn from the lessons of television’s past. Temp workers have been at the center of the premise of more shows than have hirsute rednecks expressing uninformed political opinions in the all-but-inscrutable language of backwoods patois. Why not build on that positive image of TV history?

Grindl

The first TV show to try making hay out of a temp’s lifestyle of showing up in a different place every week traces all the way back to 1963. For almost exactly one year to the date between premiere and final airing, “Grindl” saw star Imogene Coca working for Foster’s Temporary Employment Agency and trekking from one workplace to another every week. One week Coca’s temp worker Grindl might be a maid and the next week she might be sitting in the box office at the local movie theater. Why no network executive has seen how such a set-up could be exploited for copycat programming is one of life’s great mysteries.

Joe’s World

A good three decades or so later, “Joe’s Life” showed up on ABC. This show was originally set between the recession of the George H.W. Bush administration and the economic turnaround experienced during the Clinton administration. In other words, “Joe World” struggled to reflect the rise of temp work as not just an alternative, but a necessity for survival. A temp job was the only option left for a good many Americans. Not for Joe, of course; he was a nighttime cook. But during the day, while Joe stayed home to take care of the kids, his wife Sandy was out working as a temp. No job security, no paid vacation, no insurance. What Sandy did get was the opportunity to meet new and interesting people every week.

Mystery Science Theater 3000

It doesn’t come up very often, except in the theme song before some episodes, but it is worth remembering that Mike Nelson was a temp. Actually, it does come up to a great degree occasionally in some episodes where the theme song does not even remind you. Mike Nelson may well be the poster boy for the worst possible experience of being a temp. He got blasted into space where his only companions are robots and where he is forced to watch bad movies. Some of them not really as bad as they are made out to be. What could be a worse experience for a temp than showing up for a job one day and getting blasted into space. Then again, Mike gets to travel through time and space and that sort of counts for a vacation, I guess, which puts him well ahead of most temp workers. He’s also got a steady supply of food and seems to be fairly healthy, so, in reality, I guess you could make the argument that Mike Nelson actually has it better than some temp workers.

Nancy Drew

Not that version you’re thinking of, but the 1995 version of “Nancy Drew.” Nancy was a temp worker in New York and those temporary employee opportunities always managed to land her smack dab in the middle of a mystery that needed solving.

King of the Hill

In a way, one could say that a substitute teacher is the most iconic of temp jobs. You might be temping in a history class one day and out on the playground as a P.E. teacher across the town the next. Peggy Hill was the winner of the Substitute Teacher of the Year Award for Tom Landry Middle School three years in a row. Despite the significant negative component of barely being able to speak the language, Spanish class was her forte. And yet, over the course of the 13 seasons of “King of the Hill” Peggy Hill temporarily taught science and organic farming in middle school, geometry in high school and even passed herself off as a nun in order to teach at a private Catholic elementary school.

UFC and WWE Branded Networks: Next Stage of TV Evolution or Flash in the Pan?

SLEB | Vince McMahon and The WWE Global Machine Part 4

Entertainment organizations like the UFC and WWE are venturing into risky territory with online membership channels. For those unaware, these two entertainment behemoths have recently launched their own internet channels. These channels require a monthly fee of $9.99 and allow members unrestricted access to massive libraries of past events, exclusive live content for the UFC, and access to monthly Pay-Per-View events for the WWE.

To the uninitiated, these channels are riding the coattails of other media ideologies such as Netflix and Hulu, although instead of being the middle man and offering content from multiple sources, they are offering their own content direct to consumers. This business model, while not new in its simplest form, is the next stage of evolution in broadcasting. Companies like WWE and UFC not only guarantee themselves monthly revenues directly from consumers, they also reap the rewards of sponsors while getting to keep the entire chunk of change instead of splitting those revenues with Cable Networks such as TBS, Spike, or Fox.

At the early stages of this content delivery model, the UFC and WWE are carving out a niche and building a strong committed viewership. However, there are quite a few landmines waiting in the future that may derail the hype train for this particular plan.

  • 1. Alienating Business Partners

The UFC is currently under contract with Fox Sports to deliver exclusive live content on a consistent basis. The WWE is also currently under contract with the USA and SYFY networks to produce shows. How will these networks react to additional content being developed and distributed directly to consumers?

In the case of WWE, the result is the need to shop around for a new network to call home which they are currently doing. As for the UFC, there haven’t been any public discourse as of yet.

  • 2. Alienating consumers

This is more prevalent for the UFC than it is for the WWE as the UFC will be streaming exclusive fight cards that are only available on UFC Fight Pass while the WWE will show most Pay-Per-Views to members instead of having to pay extra for it. If the UFC’s exclusive content was under card fights and prelims, I wouldn’t have a problem. But when it is an entire Saturday night card including a headlining fight that I want to see, I get a little upset.

I understand Dana White is a promoter first and the bottom line is the most important thing to him; rightfully so. However, I already buy Pay Per Views (Or watch them at the bar and spend money doing so) and I am also subjected to every bit of advertising squeezed into the broadcasts. I am not going to pay an additional $10 a month to watch more advertisements.

  • 3. Extended Competition – Consumer Overload

Many media companies will be carefully monitoring the success of these networks in the short term for signs of viability. Both the WWE and UFC have limited competition when it comes to their respective niches, however, other entities will be looking to create channels of their own to get a piece of the pie. So what does this mean for consumers? Lots and lots of options.

So how could having a vast array of entertainment options using this model be a bad thing? Well, when consumers have to pay $10 a month for each of these channels in addition to every other niche brand that enters the market, customers will eventually revolt.

Exactly how many of these channels will each consumer be willing to pay for every month? My guess is not very many.…

Supreme Court to Decide If Swearing on Network TV is Indecent

Will It Soon Be Legal to Say Curse Words on Broadcast Television? – The Hollywood Reporter

Over the course of the next few weeks, the Supreme Court will be hearing arguments both for and against allowing or disallowing the prohibition of certain curse words on network television. And, according to the Hollywood Reporter, deciding for decades to come whether Americans will find a safe haven from the decadence seen in cable channels.

Not surprisingly, the Christian Science Monitor has weighed in suggesting that not only does the government reserve the right to prohibit indecent or profane content on television that is freely available to children, but a mandate to do so.

Unfortunately, or not, depending on which side you’re on, the issue before the court isn’t whether swear words are indecent, or whether people uttering such words on network television is inappropriate, because the job of the Supreme court, as NPR reminds readers, is to read the Constitution and look at pending legal issues to see whether it’s covered or not. This means that the ruling, whichever way it goes, is likely to have broader implications than just whether people should be allowed to swear on network television. If the court rules that the constitution allows the government to step in to prevent the broadcasting of indecent or obscene material over so-called publically accessible airwaves, than some in the legal profession might interpret that to mean certain parts of the Internet as well.

On the other hand, if the court says the government doesn’t have the right to filter network television, it’s not likely that things will change anytime soon anyway. As the Report correctly points out, advertisers hold the keys to that kingdom. If they feel content in a show they sponsor will hurt them, they will refuse to sponsor them, and that will make whatever the court has to say rather moot.

There is the possibility that there might be some middle ground as well. With the networks fighting what they see as an uphill battle against cable channels that are free to air whatever they wish, they will be fighting hard for more freedom to choose what they air, which could result in a more obvious dividing line between prime-time fare, and stuff that is allowed after hours. In such cases, it’s likely filtering children from such content will fall to parents, who thus far, have proven to be less than diligent.

What’s still unclear is how such a decision might affect viewers. If the court comes down on the side of filtering, than not much will change. But if things go the other way and swearing suddenly starts cropping up in certain television shows, will viewers complain or stop watching, or simply go along with the change. Clearly no one can say for sure, but after the court hands down its decision, we’ll no doubt find out.…

24 Hour Fine Arts-Classic Arts Showcase Network

Classic Arts Showcase

Going to the theater or concert is a real perk for those who have access to these things, but in some communities these are just a television screen away. With so many major cities that host theater and concerts many are fortunate if they can get to something like this. With the adjustment in ticket prices many city dwellers are in fact taking advantage of going to the theater a lot more. Many rural communities don’t have community theater or concert shows that come through their towns unless it’s a big event like the state or county fair. For those who have cable and satellite services in rural communities and depending on who is the carrier they can access a 24-hour channel called the Classic Arts Showcase network. It was a man by the name of Lloyd E. Rigler, who had a long time love for performing arts and had saw the decline of attendance for fine arts shows with the increase in ticket sales to where the current generation wasnt getting the exposure to the arts and no access to arts-related activities to go on.

The Classic Arts Showcase network was launched in May 1994 and has become available in more than 50 million homes. This was brought at no cost to viewers and has no advertising of any kind and this was following in line with Rigler’s vision of wanting to expose the unexposed to a world of music, dance, and concerts from musicians only known to those who are frequent concert goers. Rigler, began his career in music when he was head of RCA record’s guest relations at the New York world’s fair in the 40s and later took on the role as a promotion specialist. Rigler had temporarily left his position in the music industry when he went into the military during World War II and later went into buisness where he had met his long time buisness partner and friend Lawrence E. Deutsch while working as a broker in the food industry.

It was at that time that Rigler and Deustch had discovered what is now known as Adolph’s meat tenderizer which was created by a Los Angeles-based restaurant owner Adolph Rempp. The product was sold to Cheseborough-Ponds (company responsible for making Pond’s face cream and Vasoline petroleum jelly) in the early 1970s. It later became a part of Unilever Inc. With the financial success of selling Adolph’s meat tenderizer both Rigler and Deustch had turned their attention to philanthropy and supporting the fine arts at a time where this was only something the wealthy and privileged had done with their wealth. Rigler and Deutsch had built relationships with many fine arts organizations and performing arts companies around the country not as donors, but actually holding seats on their executive and financial boards.

Deutsch was an assistant to the artistic director of the New York City Opera and had a hand in bringing known opera performers such as Beverly Sills, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras (who would later perform with Luciano Pavaratti as the ‘Three Tenors’), Samuel Ramey, and Catherine Malitfitano, and many others. It was Rigler and Deutsch who also helped found the Los Angeles Music Center and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. Rigler, who never married or had children was a 1939 graduate of the University of Illinois. Deutsch, who never married or had children left his estate to the foundation that he and his partner Lloyd Rigler started. In accordance with Rigler’s wishes before he passed in 2003 he funded the Classic Arts Showcase network to run up to through 2022 which is 8 years away. This network is picked up by stations all over the country and many should consider sponsoring this network to keep it going for years to come and to keep the work of one man’s vision bringing the arts to the masses alive and well.

The network shows clips of dance footage with performers like Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudoph Nureyev from their early days as principal dancers doing shows like the Nutcracker Ballet and other shows for countless ballet and theater companies. It also shows footage of jazz and blues acts as well many that the general public hasnt really seen since you would have to travel to that part of the world to catch them. The Classic Arts Showcase network has a website you can check out and even consider them as one to patronize if you love the fine arts as much as Lloyd Rigler did spending his entire working career creating something for generations to continue enjoying. You can log on to the Classic Arts Network website at www.classicartsshowcase.org and find out how you can continue to support the work of a man who shared his passion for the arts with the world.…

Express Shopping Network Suffers During Transition

Mott-transition-based RRAM - ScienceDirect

After the reversal of the Express Shopping Network (ESN : ACE) Secondary Public Offering in December, the future was in flux as CEO Stray Underwood looked for alternatives to the once ambitious but languishing Heads-Up Display retail system that had been in the development stages.

On January 13, 2009, Underwood made a statement relative to the ACE Crisis, stating, “As should be known to investors, this company still holds no assets. We have no money, no income, no expenses. Right now the only thing paying to keep this company alive is me. My money outside of ACE is paying for the development of the HUD. I am now holding a vote in the ESN forum to figure out the coming steps.”

The original vote was to the effect of which exchange ESN(ACE) was to relist at, and ISE seemed to be the frontrunner of the three possible candidates, with 12 votes, and SLCAPEX getting 4 votes and VSTEX receiving 1.

Then, on the 15th, Stray Underwood stepped down as CEO, stating in the official press release, “It has been over 8 months since I started working on ESN. I took on the shell company to help the investors, and try to get them back to a profit situation, and to help ACE save a listing. I thought helping Intlibber and ACE would be a good thing, because there is no better situation then being able to help people and make money at the same time.”

“The only stipulation I had on taking over ESN was that BnT would develop the system for the Hud, when agreed they would I had developed a website and many objects/reading had them translated into 5 languages all based on what BnT said they were doing. Then after a stop in communication, then being given many different reasons as to why nothing was being done and the reverse of the SPO I now sit at a personal loss of over $700 USD.”

“This loss is a direct effect of BnT not producing what they said they would, and being continually told things were moving forward.”

“Everything to date paid for out of my own pocket is garbage, and I am not willing to pay for the development and new content and website out of my own pocket. Effective as of posting I am stepping down as CEO of Express Shopping Network.”

Underwood then also added, “I will now fade back to being an investor, and my main holding will continue to be ESN, I will do my best to help the new CEO get up to date, and help on what ever I can, as I still hold just under 300k shares. Thank you to everyone that worked with me on this, trying to help a lost company turn around, but for such a venture to work, everyone needed to do what they had said. Sadly the most important did not and was not truthful about the situation. I am sorry I was unable to help turn this company around, but I am no longer going to fund it.”

ESN is currently halted from open market trading while a meeting is arranged and a going forward plan is realized among the current shareholders. Whether a new CEO and business plan will come out, or if the company will be permanently delisted, is still uncertain.…

Gaming Social Network Service Raptr Goes Live

Apps Like Raptr – Social Networking Platform for Gamers – Just Alternative To

Move over, Xfire. Make way, Steam. There’s a new instant messenger designed just for gamers. After more than 2 years in beta, gaming social networking service Raptr has stepped onto the scene. This service allows you to see what games your friends are playing, and contact them from within the game – even if you’re playing something else, or nothing at all. While this may sound exactly like what longtime gaming instant messenger service Xfire has to offer, hold onto your controller.

For a long time, the main drawback of Xfire was the fact that your buddies needed to be on Xfire for you to chat across different games. Between not wanting to join another instant messaging service and Xfire’s incompatibility with some computer combinations, friends fell through the cracks. This issue was later addressed, and Xfire now also allows you to chat with friends on Windows Live and AIM. PC platform Steam also offers a community chat function, but this was only for communication across games on the Steam network.

Raptr goes above and beyond its two greatest competitors by allowing gamers several ways to contact their friends. Raptr not only supports integration for the “big 3” of instant messengers (AIM, Yahoo! and MSN/Windows Live), they also support Facebook, Twitter, Google Talk and ICQ. Last but not least, Raptr integrates with Xfire and Steam – poising them to wipe out their fiercest competition. And iPhone users? Yeah, there’s an app for that.

Unlike Xfire and Steam, Raptr also works across several gaming platforms. Not only is it compatible with PC, the client also works for Mac (no delay here, folks), Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360’s Xbox Live. All of this is achieved whether your friends are logged in to Raptr or not. If your buddy loads up a flash game in their browser, you’re going to know about it – and be able to pester her while she plays. In addition to all the ways to connect outside the service, Raptr offers forums on their site and a “comprehensive gaming profile” to track your trophies and achievements. Bragging rights, anyone?

With the wide range of ways to keep in touch with your fellow fraggers, it’s easy to see why Raptr is touting itself as “The Ultimate Gaming App.” But how much is too much? Of the crop of articles written about the service’s official launch this week, several comments left by readers suggested that Raptr may not be something the gaming community is interested in. Twitter users report that it’s annoying having Raptr chats overloading their streams of incoming tweets. Many gamers have also voiced annoyance at Raptr making games temporarily lock up – which can be a life-or-death situation, depending on the game you’re playing. Last but not least, do you want to be bothered by everyone and their mom while you’re trying to get your game on?

Raptr may be the way to go if you spend all your time gaming and have lost contact with your social network. It may also be a way to track down your favorite gamer when you know they won’t be logged in anywhere but their favorite game. Time will tell if Raptr becomes the gaming world’s communication platform of choice.

Stedman Graham Guides Women to Success: Exclusive Interview with the Leadership Author, Lecturer & Speaker

Stedman Graham | Speaker Agency, Speaking Fee, Videos | SPEAKING.com Keynote Speakers Bureau

In this exclusive interview with us, Graham shared his views and challenges women face in developing their full leadership potential.

Gender Barriers to Business Success

According to Graham, one of the biggest barriers to success for women is the fact that some women are stuck with the label of being a woman accepting their social role and buying into whatever they have learned about being a woman. It restricts women from being free thinkers. They are limited by the definition given by others.

Another barrier is “the good old boys club” which fuels inequality and the notion that women don’t play golf or sports and simply don’t understand the concept of team play. There is a clear access issue and it is only recently that women started to organize themselves in networks and groups. As women get more involved, building their self-esteem moving beyond the ascribed labels they will be able to see themselves as true equals and confidently bring their unique expertise and strength without having to apologize for being a woman.

Women Leadership in Transition

In the years since women have been introduced to “leadership studies,” we wanted to know what Graham has learned about women leaders and the contexts that promote and sustain women’s leadership.

Graham asserts that women can accomplish as much or more as their male counterparts once they come together and build an empowerment base. He cautions that women, as they build this power base, are susceptible to fall into similar discriminatory practices and patterns as the “good old boys club.”

In any group that comes together to represent themselves, members are often not flexible enough to include other people. Graham asserts that as women leadership has been in transition this has been an interesting phenomenon to watch. He sees women coming to power and earning money in these settings engaging in the same discriminatory practices. Graham advices that this is something to think about as women go through this transitional phase.

Stedman Graham Guides Women to Success

Even if a woman leader adopts a gender-neutral view of the world, chances are the people around her probably will not. The differences explain why understanding gender roles is vital for women in leadership. we asked Graham how to build a much needed foundation for leadership growth to address this issue.

“It is important to own your own self and your own mind,” Graham responds. “This is why the Nine-Step Process discussed in my books is so important. It teaches ownership of oneself. It teaches how to develop a process for continued self development so one can improve. Everyone has 24 hours. The question is, what do you do with your 24 hours?”

The combination of understanding one’s identity, skills and vision, are the foundation of Graham’s teaching, allowing women to translate a mission into an action plan. There will be obstacles, discrimination and sometimes public policy restricting her to work within a certain system. To be able to lead herself requires flexibility, mobility and patience to overcome those obstacles. His Nine Steps give women a process they can believe in and put into action.

For Stedman Graham everyone is equal and what makes a person strong is to be able to create a purpose in their life that allows them to sustain themselves despite any barriers and maintain strength to last a lifetime. “If you have that, you can develop, evolve and grow without being self destructive.”…

Bank rates reduced to arrest economic slow down

Methods to Control Inflation - Economics Help

Reserve Bank Of India is doing its best to arrest slow down of economic growth. It announced reduction in bank rate and cash reserve ratio in its mid term monetary policy. The bank rate is reduced by 50 basis points to 6.50 percent, lowest in the last 28 years. The cash reserve ratio is reduced to 5.50 percent from 7.50 percent.

The reduction in interest rate is expected to improve investment and consumption which in turn is expected to improve demand for goods and services. There is a constant complaint form the industrial class in the country that the cost of capital in the country is high. The present reduction in bank rate fits into the governments long term plans to make cost of capital attractive for investment. One has to wait and see how much this policy initiative will translate into actual investment.

If the reduction in bank rate is passed on to the retail borrowers then the demand for goods and services will definitely increase. India has a large population who save rather than consume. The country’s saving is 20 percent of GDP which is high even compared to some developed nations. The reduction in interest rate, both on saving and loans can act as an incentive to consume which in turn can improve demand. For banks average cost of funds is 7 percent, operating expenses add another 2.5 to 3 percent to the costs. Another important cost factor for the Indian banking sector is the bad debts shown as non performing assets in the balance sheet of the banks.

Cash reserve ratio (CRR) is the cash balance which banks have to park with central bank. Estimates are that the reduction in cash reserve ratio will infused Rs 8000 crore into the system. This is a quick way to make sure that the supply side is in order when there is an increase in demand for credit. The central bank will also pay 6.5 percent to the banks for the CRR balance which will improve the profitability of the banks.

The economy of the country is not the best of times, GDP growth of 6 to 6.50 percent estimated by the RBI in the beginning of the year has been revised to 5 to 6 percent by the bank. Manufacturing sector is down along with poor performance in the exports, added to this is the global economic trouble after September. Many feel that the mid term monitory policy may help at least to boost up sentiments in the economy.…

Eco-Friendly Small Business Profile – REVEAL

How to Source Eco-Friendly Packaging for Ecommerce | Sendinblue

Many small business owners are realizing that they can be greener and still make a profit. They’re adding eco-friendly products or looking into sustainable practices they can incorporate into existing businesses. Other small business owners begin their businesses with eco-friendly practices in mind. REVEAL is one business that began with an eco-friendly idea.

Terry and Jiaying Omata, who founded REVEAL, were inspired to create eco-friendly fashion accessories and handbags after backpacking through Asia, South America and Africa, where they met many people living in impoverished conditions who were struggling to create a more comfortable life for their families. They realized that this desire would add additional demand for the earth’s already diminishing resources and decided to create sustainable fashion. REVEAL believes that being eco-friendly means more than creating a line of eco-friendly handbags, though. This company believes in using sustainable methods for manufacturing and eco-friendly corporate practices as well.

The folks at REVEAL were able to set aside some time to talk about running an eco-friendly small business and have some great tips for anyone who is thinking about starting a sustainable small business.

What Do You Like Most About Owning an Eco-Friendly Small Business?

“We love coming up with ideas and designing innovative, unique products that people have not seen before. People are truly impressed when they see our gorgeous recycled bags, our bamboo accessories and other products. We love the challenge of finding new ways to design and make cool fashion accessories, it’s a bit like Project Runway! Working with other companies and individuals with the same interest in creating fun products and protecting the environment is also wonderful. Collaboration is key. We couldn’t do it without a great team supporting us.”

What Do You Wish You Knew Before Starting a Sustainable Small Business?

“Entrepreneurship is all about the journey. Especially when you’re aiming to create products that are truly different. I could list a lot of things that I wish I knew before I started, however, we choose not to focus on that. We’d rather just focus on enjoying the fact that we’re always learning something new.”

How Is REVEAL Helping the Environment?

“We make our products from environmentally friendly materials that are 100% cruelty free. We use recycled materials whenever possible. When using virgin materials, we make our best efforts to use those that are non-polluting, renewable resources. Our gorgeous Fall/Winter handbags are made of recycled satin and recycled micro suede. We did our Spring/Summer line in sustainable materials like hemp and jute. Our wooden accessories are made of either bamboo or recycled furniture parts.

Our packaging and our website also aim to make it very easy for people to understand what our products are made of and why they are eco-friendly. The concept of REVEAL came from the idea of revealing how our products are made and empowering people to make better choices. People appreciate the concept because it is similar to a food’s nutrition label. They feel good that they have more information in a way that is easy to understand.”

(For examples of REVEAL’s sustainable methods, visit their sustainability section and take a look at the photos of their hangtags.)

What Made You Realize You Could Earn a Living and Still Promote Sustainable Business Practices?

“When we went backpacking around the world. Connecting with people from all different places and cultures makes you realize how important it is to protect the environment. Everyone benefits from protecting the environment.”

Do the Majority of Your Customers Come to You Because You Have a Green Company?

“People certainly like the fact that we are aiming to do things better. However, people also buy our products simply because they like the design, they like the way the products look and function. It’s not possible to depend solely on the fact that we’re eco-friendly to draw customers; you can’t expect people to sacrifice fashion and functionality for something that is eco-friendly. In order for there to be real change, we as entrepreneurs/business owners need to help make it easier for people to make more environmentally friendlier choices.

“People mostly don’t have the time to research environmentally friendly products, so our packaging concepts helps inform and empower people. In addition, people love our REPLANT program because it is so tangible and allows people to feel like they are making a difference. For every product sold, we plant a tree. We have a partnership with American Forests, the oldest non-profit conservation organization in the U.S. to replant native trees in damaged ecosystems.”

Does REVEAL Have Any Plans to Become More Eco-Friendly or Sustainable in the Future?

“We are always looking for new ways to become more environmentally friendly, from the materials and manufacturing processes we use to the causes we support. We can always find ways to improve how we make things and we will always challenge ourselves to do so.”

Sustainable small businesses like REVEAL show entrepreneurs that are interested in creating a green company that it is possible to be kind to the earth and turn a profit. Or, as REVEAL says, “Finally, you don’t have to choose between fashion and a better planet.”

5-Year-Olds, Sales and Marketing: Learning a Lesson from Your Children

Teach Your Kids Good Money Habits – Forbes AdvisorPeople think that advertising has to do with sales. It doesn’t. Advertising is an aspect of Marketing which, in turn, helps drive sales by getting people interested in a specific product. TV advertising takes this to a whole new level when addressing children. It actually, in my opinion, turns your children into a sales force – a very, very effective sales force. All too often, people don’t consider that the little ones are also part of the whole product cycle.

For those of you that have children, I’m sure you can relate. You’re watching Barney, the Power Rangers, Buzz Lightyear or any other cartoon (pick your kid’s favorite TV show) with your child and suddenly, there’s an ad. A really really cool remote control car races across the screen, plowing throw dirt piles, jumping puddles and otherwise being amazing. Your child looks at you and goes “Daddy?” They don’t need to say anything else, simply turning their eyes to you with the puppy dog eyes perfected from birth. For those that don’t have children, Shrek 2’s cat “Puss in Boots” epitomizes the look.

Are children actually the company’s sales force? Not directly, but indirectly they certainly are. Using an existing medium such as TV to reach this untapped power, the marketing teams know what it takes to entice a child. Granted, a child is easier to entice than an adult in most cases, but there are advertisements that create a true call to action. These advertisements get your attention and then you become the sales person – even if you’re selling to yourself. “Can I really afford the new software?” “Should I really buy that truck?” “That was an interesting looking game. Maybe I should see if I can buy it.” All of these are internal wrestling matches that occur.

Marketers – focus on creating your call to action and let the client become their own salesperson. Your sales team can then simply ‘help’ them over the edge by ensuring that the technical fit is right and the need is appropriate. Think about how to reach your target group and grab their attention. Make them WANT to call you and talk to you. Not later. Now.

Look at your children, see what it is that they help foster within you when they look at you and go “Daddy?” (or Mommy?, as the case may be). Identify a similar capability in your product and focus on drawing attention to it.…
